2020VISION for a wilder Britain.
No, nothing to do with eyesight, spectacles or cricket!
2020VISION is a multi-media project broadcasting the connection between human well-being – physical, economic and spiritual – and healthy ecosystems. It’s a vision of a wilder Britain where it’s recognised that healthy ecosystems are actually good for us too.
Why 2020?
Believe it or not, scientific evidence suggests that we have only about 10 years (until 2020) to rethink the way we live before ecosystems start to break down. If we do nothing, things we currently take for granted, like clean water, food and energy, will be under threat. This is serious.
Why has this happened?
In short, we ask more of nature than it can give us. Our few remaining wild places are too small and too isolated from one another to function as they should. And that has consequences for us as well as the wild creatures living in them.
What’s the cure?
We need to look far beyond isolated nature reserves. We need nature without frontiers where animals can move freely and easily between habitats. Simply protecting our remaining wild places is not enough, we must think on a much bigger scale. To reconnect wild places with each other, to reconnect us with wild places.
What’s in it for me?
Clearly, there is a moral reason for safeguarding and enhancing our natural environment. But when it comes down to it, we all need clean water, fresh air and productive soils. There will be no interest to enjoy if we’ve spent all the capital nature has provided us with.
How are we going to make a difference?
2020VISION will inspire, inform and motivate. It’s message is simple: if we want to take care of ourselves and our families, we must first take care of the “eco-system services” provided by the wild places that we take for granted and abuse at our peril. Scientists and ecologists have provided the diagnosis: 2020VISION is dedicated to making sure that everyone knows the cure.
Who’s involved?
This unprecedented initiative is spearheaded by the Wild Media Foundation in collaboration with top flight media professionals scientists and leading NGO’s, all of whom share the vision of a wilder Britain.
The 2020VISION team
Our team of professionals includes many of Britain’s top nature and landscape image makers, which bring with them a diverse range of skills from videography and stills photography to sound engineering, design, copy writing and audio visual production.
The project
This is the UK’s most ambitious visual media initiative ever. It will commission 20 photographers to undertake 20 iWitness assignments in 20 locations to produce the most arresting imagery possible. Using the “stars of the ‘system” – the wildlife celebrities – the public will be drawn in and entertained by the bigger stories and discover why these animals and the places they live matter.
The output
The thousands of images will be woven into compelling narratives and presented in ways that will reach far beyond “the converted”. This will include exhibitions in public spaces such as shopping centres and airports, hospitals and zoos, as well as road shows, books, digital media and projected imagery.
The result
We are working to create an inspired, motivated audience. An audience of millions and one with a much greater understanding of the way that natural ecosystems work and the vital life supporting services they provide to each and every one of us.
